On the palate

The Secateurs Rosé 2023 has a pale salmon-pink color. On the nose, it offers bright and fresh aromas of red berries such as strawberries, raspberries, and red cherries, along with subtle floral notes of rose petals and hints of citrus zest. The palate is light to medium-bodied, with a crisp and refreshing acidity. Flavors of ripe red fruits, watermelon, and a touch of grapefruit are balanced by a clean minerality. AA Badenhorst Family Wines are grown, made and matured on Kalmoesfontein farm in the Swartland appellation of South Africa. 28ha of old bushvines grow in the Siebritskloof part of the Paardeberg mountain. The property is owned by the baie dynamic and good looking cousins Hein and Adi Badenhorst. They are originally from Constantia. Their grandfather was the farm manager of Groot Constantia for 46 years. Their fathers were born there and farmed together in Constantia, during the days when people still ate fresh vegetables and Hanepoot grapes, drank Cinsault and there were a lot less traffic lights and hippies still had a presence. Together these two have restored a neglected cellar on the farm that was last used in the 1930′s to make natural wines in the traditional manner.

The grapes used for this rosé are sourced from bush vines planted in the Swartland region. These vines are dry-farmed, relying on natural rainfall, which encourages deep root systems and results in concentrated fruit flavors. The vineyards benefit from the region's warm days and cool nights, which help maintain the natural acidity and freshness of the grapes. Sustainable farming practices are implemented, emphasizing minimal intervention and the health of the vineyard ecosystem to ensure the quality of the fruit.

After hand-harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed to extract the juice with minimal skin contact, achieving the desired light pink color. The juice is fermented at low temperatures in stainless steel tanks to preserve the fresh fruit flavors and aromatic intensity. Fermentation is carried out using natural yeasts, which adds complexity to the wine. The wine does not undergo malolactic fermentation, keeping its crisp acidity intact.
