This wine pairs well with hearty dishes, such as barbecued or glazed lamb and grilled vegetables, where its robust tannins and peppery notes complement the savory flavors​.

In 1679 Simon van der Stel was appointed by the Dutch East India Company to govern the Cape of Good Hope. After years of loyal service he requested land from the Company. He periodically sent out riders to collect soil samples. In 1685 he chose 891 morgen (about 763 ha) situated behind Table Mountain for its wine-growing potential and magnificent scenery. Over the years the wines produced on the estate caught the attention of influential people across the globe – clearly due to its impressive quality. Global aristocracy made sure that they had enough stock of this acclaimed and precious product. Our founder named his farm Constantia after the Latin word for constancy or steadfastness. These attributes he valued greatly and today we follow in his footsteps to uphold his enduring legacy of perfection at Groot Constantia.

The Shiraz grapes are grown in Groot Constantia’s Constantia vineyards, situated on cool, south-facing slopes. These vineyards benefit from a Mediterranean climate with cooling Atlantic breezes, which help retain acidity and complexity. The soils are predominantly yellow-brown clay and red-brown loam with granitic origins, supporting vine health and deep-rooting systems essential for flavor intensity​.

Matured for 12 months in a mix of French oak barrels (25% new, 25% second fill, 25% third fill, and 15% fourth fill), along with a small proportion in a large foudre to enhance the wine’s complexity and smoothness.

Grapes are hand-picked, with the largest portion fermented in closed tanks and a smaller portion whole-bunch fermented in open fermenters. The wine underwent a maceration period of approximately four weeks after fermentation​.
