McFarlane Wines was born while sharing dreams and desires one evening over dinner, sometime in 2018. A dream to have something family-owned and operated, and a deep desire to honour some of South Africa’s heritage varieties. South Africa’s vinous history is a unique one, and certain varieties have had a significant influence in shaping where the South African wine industry is today. McFarlane Wines aims to produce fine, honest wines from these varieties and share what we love about them with the world.

Both portions of fruit are grown in cool climate areas. The vineyard in Durbanville makes up the biggest component of this wine. This block of young bushvines are planted on a rocky shale slope with a view of the ocean. This block is farmed using organic farming practices.

The wine was then racked to old French oak barrels for maturation and malolactic fermentation. This wine was gently filtered before bottling.

The grapes were rigourously sorted by hand at bunch level before destemming 85% of this fruit to open top fermenters. The grapes were foot stomped and then punched down gently 3 times per day, for 10 days, before being pressed off to tank.
