Paradiso Syrah

"My family bought a small farm on the Kasteelberg in 2009. 11 years later a cellar was built, which is currently shared between Donovan (Rall Wines), Jolandie (Wolf and Woman Wines) and myself. My passion is Syrah and Chenin Blanc although a few select vineyards are too special to pass up. I have a “hands-off” approach in the winery unless something requires attention. I don’t feel the need to justify my position as a winemaker by being hyperactive in the cellar. Ultimately the vineyard and the resulting wine must do the talking."

The grapes come from a single vineyard between Riebeek Kasteel and Malmesbury. The farm is dryland (no irrigation) and certified organic – the wine is unfortunately not certified organic as my family’s cellar has not yet got the certification. These iron rich soils produce small bunches with the resulting wine both rich in structure and perfume.

10 months in a 2550L Stockinger foudre and three old 225L oak barrels.

Hand harvested at dawn into small crates and put in the cold room for a few hours. 100% whole-bunches go into a concrete tank and foot-stomped to release some juice followed by natural fermentation.
