The grapes for Krug 1988 were sourced from 21 different villages across the Champagne region, reflecting a diverse terroir. The vintage benefited from a year without excess, providing expressive fruit with great freshness and character.

The 1988 Krug Vintage Champagne was aged on the lees for over a decade before its initial release. A portion of this vintage was held back and later released as the Krug Collection 1988, which spent 29 years on the lees before disgorgement in 2017.

Krug is renowned for fermenting all its base wines in small oak casks, a practice that contributes to the Champagne's intense bouquet and complex flavors. The 1988 vintage underwent fermentation in these casks, followed by extended ageing on the lees. ​
